Why a Perfect March Madness Bracket Is Almost Impossible
The perfect bracket is not hard because basketball is confusing. It is hard because 63 games create a number too large for intuition.
Warren Buffett understood the joke.
In 2014, Quicken Loans partnered with Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway on a contest with a clean, outrageous promise: fill out a perfect men's college basketball bracket and win $1 billion. The number was enormous because the risk was tiny. Not because basketball is predictable, but because the bracket is a combinatorics machine disguised as office fun.
Every March, millions of people convince themselves they have a system.
Pick the blue bloods. Trust guard play. Fade the over-seeded team. Never pick all four No. 1 seeds. Always pick one 12-over-5 upset. Choose the mascot. Choose the coach. Choose the school your cousin went to. The methods range from serious scouting to vibes, but the fantasy is the same: maybe this is the year.
The math is less sentimental.
Start with a tiny tournament. Four teams create three games: two semifinals and one championship. Each game has two possible winners. That means a completely random bracket has 2 x 2 x 2 possible outcomes, or eight total brackets.
Eight teams means seven games. That is 2 to the 7th power, or 128 possible brackets.
Sixteen teams means 15 games. Now the number jumps to 32,768.
By the time you reach a normal 64-team bracket, there are 63 games to pick. If every game were a coin flip, the number of possible brackets would be 2 to the 63rd power:
9,223,372,036,854,775,808.
That is 9.2 quintillion.
The number is so large that ordinary comparisons start to fail. The NCAA has pointed out that your odds of choosing a perfect bracket by random guessing are worse than choosing a specific grain of sand from all the beaches and deserts on Earth. Axios framed the sand comparison the same way: picking the grain would actually be easier.
This is why the bracket feels so cruel. You can be good at basketball and still be nowhere near perfect. A single 13-seed hitting a late three can erase a region. A foul call can break a chain of logic. One star rolls an ankle. One team has a cold shooting night. One underdog plays the best 40 minutes of its season. The bracket does not ask whether your process was reasonable. It asks whether you were exactly right 63 times.
There is one important caveat: the games are not true coin flips.
A No. 1 seed is not equally likely to lose to a No. 16 seed. Some teams are clearly stronger than others. Injuries, travel, tempo, shooting profile, defense, coaching, and matchup all matter. If you use basketball knowledge, your odds improve dramatically compared with blind guessing. NCAA estimates and outside analyses often put an informed bracket in the billions-to-one range rather than quintillions-to-one.
That sounds like a big improvement until you remember what a billion means.
The hard part is not picking obvious winners. It is correctly identifying the rare exceptions without creating new mistakes somewhere else. If you always pick favorites, you avoid some chaos but miss the upsets that actually happen. If you chase upsets, you look brilliant for one Thursday afternoon and then discover you killed half your Elite Eight. The tournament rewards risk, then punishes it immediately.
That is why no widely verified public bracket has ever finished perfect. The closest tracked men's bracket in the modern online era reached 49 correct games in 2019 before finally missing in the Sweet 16. Forty-nine straight is absurd. It was still 14 games short.
The Buffett contest made the impossibility visible because it put a billionaire's prize on top of a schoolyard worksheet. A billion dollars sounds like a challenge. The bracket math turns it into theater.
But that is also why people keep filling them out.
March Madness is not popular because everyone believes they will solve it. It is popular because almost everyone can understand the shape of the problem. You do not need to know advanced statistics to feel the drama of one line advancing and another line dying. The bracket compresses a national tournament into a single page where hope, loyalty, probability, and bad judgment all fit in the same boxes.
The perfect bracket is nearly impossible.
The busted bracket is the point.
