Why This Windowless Tower Looms Over the Brooklyn Bridge
375 Pearl Street was built as a telephone switching fortress. Its blank walls made it notorious, then made it valuable again as a data center.
If you have ever photographed the Brooklyn Bridge from the river side, you may have already cursed 375 Pearl Street without knowing its name.

The tower sits near the Manhattan end of the bridge, a pale, blunt slab rising behind one of the most beloved pieces of infrastructure in the world. It does not politely step back. It does not soften the view. It looms. For decades, critics treated it as one of New York's great architectural intrusions, the building that barged into the postcard.
But the reason it looks so strange is not random bad taste.
It was built for machines.
Completed in 1975 for New York Telephone, 375 Pearl Street was a telephone switching building. That job shaped almost everything people dislike about it. Switching centers were not designed like ordinary office towers because they did not primarily house office workers. They housed the equipment that routed calls through the city's communications network.
Those systems needed security, power, cooling, redundancy, and controlled interior conditions. Windows were not a feature. They were a liability. Sunlight added heat. Glass complicated climate control and resilience. The building's narrow vertical slits were not there to make pleasant offices. Many functioned as vents or limited openings in a hardened technical shell.
That explains the building, but it does not make it lovable.
As it was nearing completion, New York Times architecture critic Paul Goldberger called it one of the most disturbing of the phone company's new switching centers, arguing that it overwhelmed the Brooklyn Bridge towers and cast a banal tone over the area. Decades later, the building became a regular entry in ugly-building lists; The Daily Telegraph ranked it 20th among the world's ugliest buildings in 2012.
The critique stuck because the site is unforgiving.
A blank telecom tower might be easier to ignore in an industrial district. At the Brooklyn Bridge approach, it becomes part of the city's visual memory. Every tourist image, every waterfront view, every glance from the bridge has to negotiate with it. The building's purpose was internal, but its consequences were public.
Then telecommunications changed.
As switching equipment became smaller and networks evolved, the original logic of huge windowless telephone buildings weakened. Verizon eventually sold most of 375 Pearl. In 2011, Sabey Data Centers acquired the property and repositioned it as Intergate.Manhattan, a major data center and technology building.
That sounds like a dramatic second life, but it was really a continuation.
The qualities that made the building hostile to office workers made it useful for servers: heavy floor loads, robust power, redundant infrastructure, secure access, cooling capacity, telecom connectivity, and a central Manhattan location. Sabey now markets the property as a mixed data-center and office asset, with dedicated data-center space, multiple carriers, and significant power capacity.
In other words, the building did not become valuable in spite of its old telecom DNA.
It became valuable because of it.
The harder problem was the upper floors. A data center can live happily in a sealed box. Office tenants cannot. If 375 Pearl was going to attract conventional users above the technical floors, it needed daylight, views, and a less punishing exterior.
So the building got surgery.
Beginning in the mid-2010s, the upper 15 floors were renovated. Large sections of the old limestone facade were removed and replaced with glass curtain wall. The move did not turn 375 Pearl into a delicate tower, and it did not erase decades of civic resentment. But it changed the building's expression. The top became visibly occupiable. The old fortress gained a face.
That renovation also created one of the oddest architectural hybrids in Lower Manhattan.
The lower portion still reads as infrastructure: heavy, guarded, technical, stubborn. The upper portion reads more like speculative office space. The tower is half machine building, half reluctant workplace, with the dividing line written directly into the facade.
That split tells a larger story about cities.
Urban infrastructure often becomes hated when it is visible. People want phone service, fiber connections, resilient data centers, emergency communications, cloud computing, and always-on networks. They do not necessarily want the buildings required to make those systems work. 375 Pearl is the physical bill for a connected city, placed in one of the most photographed views in New York.
It also exposes how architectural taste changes when use changes.
A windowless tower for telephone switches looked brutal because it ignored ordinary urban expectations. A hardened tower for servers suddenly seems practical because digital infrastructure has become central to almost everything. The same mass, the same strength, the same cooling logic, and the same lack of conventional windows can move from civic insult to strategic asset.
That does not mean the building is beautiful.
It means beauty was never the main assignment.
375 Pearl Street was built to keep communications running, not to flatter the Brooklyn Bridge. It failed the postcard test and passed the infrastructure test. Its renovation made the skyline slightly less severe, but the deeper lesson remains: some buildings look the way they do because the city needs invisible systems to have very visible homes.
